Cayenne and other Capsicum species contain 1-2% naturally occurring phenolic alkaloids by dry weight, collectively known as capsaicinoids. Capsaicin, dihydrocapsaicin and nordihydrocapsaicin comprise approximately 95% of the total level of capsaicinoids. Cayenne pepper’s benefits are numerous; helps promote digestion via influencing the flow of digestive secretions, helps improve circulation, lower cholesterol and blood fat levels. Promotes perspiration – a natural cooling mechanism of the body.
Capsaicin affects physiological pathways involved in the perception of temperature and pain by interacting with sensory neurons.
